Parental Sponsorship

Through parental sponsorship programs, Canadian citizens and PR can sponsor their parents with the dependent children and grandparents, to allow them to come to Canada and receive Permanent Residency.

In order for a Canadian citizen or PR to support his parents he has to prove his eligibility:

  1. Be at least 18 years old

  2. Live permanently in Canada

  3. Have enough money to support the parents and prove it with proof of income: https://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=1445&top=14.

On the other hand, the parents, grandparents, and their dependent children (under the age of 22) will have to prove their admissibility by undergoing: police, biometrics, and medical checks when asked.

The program undergoes changes every year. For example, in 2019 the program allowed about 20,000 applications worldwide, which were submitted online when prompted. The program was highly criticized because of the technical issues and because the allowed quantity of the applications was submitted in less than 10 minutes.

It was declared by the government of Canada, that the program will change in 2020.
